Venn Diagram
A diagram for two and three sets and the size of the union by the inclusion–exclusion formula.
This calculator draws Venn diagrams for two and three sets, from lists of elements or from the counts of elements in the sets and their intersections.
|A ∪ B| = |A| + |B| − |A ∩ B|
|A ∪ B ∪ C| = |A| + |B| + |C| − |A ∩ B| − |A ∩ C| − |B ∩ C| + |A ∩ B ∩ C|
Example. In a class 25 people play football, 18 play chess and 7 do both. In total that is 25 + 18 − 7 = 36 people.
It is easiest to fill the diagram from the centre: first the common part, then the outer areas.
