Place Value
How many digits and periods a number has, the digit in each place and the total ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.
The place value calculator shows how many digits and periods a number has, which digit stands in each place, and how many ones, tens, hundreds and thousands the number contains in total.
The digit in a place and the total in the number
These are different questions. In 4,528 the hundreds digit is 5, but the number contains 45 hundreds in total. To find how many whole hundreds fit, drop the last two digits.
Example. 4,528 = 4,000 + 500 + 20 + 8. It has 4 digits, 452 tens, 45 hundreds and 4 thousands.
Periods
From right to left, places are grouped in threes called periods: ones, thousands, millions, billions.
