Salinity
Water salinity in per mille, the mass of salts in seawater and the mass of water needed for a given amount of salt.
What to find:
Salinity is the grams of salts dissolved in 1 kg (≈ 1 L) of water, in per mille (‰). In the first mode the mass of water is in kilograms.
The salinity calculator finds the salinity in per mille, the mass of salts in a given amount of water, and the mass of water that yields a required amount of salt.
What salinity is
Salinity is the number of grams of salts dissolved in 1 kg (about 1 liter) of water, expressed in per mille (‰) — thousandths:
S = m(salts), g/m(water), kg ‰
| Water body | Salinity, ‰ |
|---|---|
| World Ocean (average) | 35 |
| Red Sea | up to 41 |
| Black Sea | about 18 |
| Baltic Sea | 2–8 |
| fresh water | under 1 |
Example. 1 t of Black Sea water (18 ‰) contains 18 · 1000 = 18,000 g = 18 kg of salts.
