Image Size
The size of an uncompressed raster image I = w · h · i from dimensions and color depth or palette size; colors for a given size.
The image size calculator finds the size of an uncompressed raster image from its dimensions and color depth or palette size, and the maximum number of colors for a file of a given size.
Formulas
I = w · h · i, N = 2i
w and h are the width and height in pixels, i is the color depth (bits per pixel), N is the number of colors in the palette.
| Color depth | Colors |
|---|---|
| 1 bit | 2 (black and white) |
| 8 bits | 256 |
| 16 bits (High Color) | 65,536 |
| 24 bits (True Color) | 16,777,216 |
Example. A 640 × 480 image with a 256-color palette: i = 8, I = 640 · 480 · 8 = 2,457,600 bits = 300 KB.
