Solve for a Variable
Isolate the chosen variable in a linear equation, expanding brackets and moving terms step by step.
Variables are single letters: 2x + 3y − z = 7, 5(a − b) = c/2. A product of two variables is not supported.
This calculator isolates the chosen variable in a linear equation: it expands brackets, combines like terms and moves them to the other side.
The steps
- Expand the brackets and combine like terms.
- Keep the term with the variable on one side and move the others with the opposite sign.
- Divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable.
Example. From 2x + 3y = 7 we get 2x = 7 − 3y, so x = 7/2 − 3/2 · y.
