Temperature Coefficient of Resistance
Values of α for metals and alloys.
Pure metals
| Material | α, 1/°C (near 20 °C) |
|---|---|
| Aluminium | 0.0039 |
| Tungsten | 0.0045 |
| Iron | 0.0050 |
| Gold | 0.0034 |
| Copper | 0.0039 |
| Nickel | 0.0060 |
| Tin | 0.0042 |
| Platinum | 0.0039 |
| Lead | 0.0039 |
| Silver | 0.0038 |
| Zinc | 0.0037 |
Alloys with low α
| Material | α, 1/°C (near 20 °C) |
|---|---|
| Constantan | 0.00001 |
| Manganin | 0.00001 |
| Nichrome | 0.0002 |
The resistance of a conductor depends on temperature: R = R₀(1 + α(t − t₀)). The values are rounded and given as a guide: α depends on the purity of the metal and the temperature range, so figures differ slightly between handbooks.
