Ball Flight
The range, height and flight time of a ball with air drag, with a plot of the path.
The example is for a football. Cd depends on the speed and surface of the ball, usually 0.2–0.5. Spin and wind are ignored.
This calculator finds the range, height and flight time of a ball with air drag and compares them with flight without drag.
F = ½ · Cd · ρ · S · v²
Without drag the range is v₀² sin 2α / g. With drag the ball lands noticeably closer and the path becomes asymmetric.
The result is an estimate: the spin of the ball and wind are ignored.
