Stoichiometry
Solve stoichiometry problems: mass and volume of a product, limiting reactant, percent yield, with a step-by-step solution.
The stoichiometry calculator solves typical problems: find the mass, volume or amount of a product (or reactant) from a known substance. The equation may be entered without coefficients — the calculator balances it. There is a limiting reactant mode and an optional percent yield.
Solution steps
- Write the equation and balance it.
- Find the amount of the known substance: n = m / M or n = V / 22.4.
- Use the equation: the amounts are in the ratio of the coefficients, n(B) = n(A) · ν(B) / ν(A).
- Find the mass m = n · M or the gas volume V = n · 22.4.
Limiting reactant
If the amounts of two reactants are given, divide each by its coefficient. The reactant with the smaller ratio is limiting — it reacts completely, and the calculation uses it.
Percent yield
η = mactual / mtheoretical · 100 %
Example. 4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3. From 11.2 g of iron: n(Fe) = 11.2 / 56 = 0.2 mol, n(Fe2O3) = 0.2 · 2 / 4 = 0.1 mol, m = 0.1 · 160 = 16 g.
