Oscillations and Waves
Period of a simple pendulum and a mass on a spring, pendulum length, frequency and wavelength.
π ≈ 3.1416, so answers with π are approximate. The speed of sound in air is about 340 m/s, the speed of light 3e8 m/s.
The oscillations and waves calculator finds the period of a simple pendulum and a mass on a spring, the pendulum length, the frequency and the wavelength.
Pendulums
| Oscillator | Period |
|---|---|
| simple pendulum | T = 2π√(l / g) |
| mass on a spring | T = 2π√(m / k) |
The period of a simple pendulum does not depend on the mass, and that of a spring does not depend on g. A 1 m pendulum swings once in about 2 s.
Frequency and wavelength
f = 1/T, λ = v · T = v/f
Example. A 440 Hz tone (A4) in air: λ = 340 / 440 ≈ 0.77 m.
