Density
Density ρ = m / V, mass and volume with unit conversion (g/cm³, liters, grams), a solution and substance lookup by density.
The density calculator finds the density of a substance from mass and volume, and the mass or volume of a body from its density. If the density matches a known substance, the calculator tells you which one it may be.
Formulas
ρ = m / V, m = ρ · V, V = m / ρ
Density is the mass per unit volume. The SI unit is kg/m³; g/cm³ is also common: 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³. Also 1 L = 1 dm³ = 0.001 m³ and 1 mL = 1 cm³.
Densities of some substances
| Substance | ρ, kg/m³ | Substance | ρ, kg/m³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 19,300 | Glass | 2500 |
| Mercury | 13,600 | Water | 1000 |
| Lead | 11,300 | Ice | 900 |
| Copper | 8900 | Kerosene, ethanol | 800 |
| Steel, iron | 7800 | Petrol | 710 |
| Aluminium | 2700 | Pine | 400 |
Example 1. A 540 g block has a volume of 200 cm³: ρ = 0.54 kg / 0.0002 m³ = 2700 kg/m³ — aluminium.
Example 2. The mass of 5 L of water: m = 1000 kg/m³ · 0.005 m³ = 5 kg.
